For many years, I have had the privilege of working in community theatre in Greensboro, North Carolina, where I have witnessed first-hand the extraordinary impact theatre can have on children, families and entire communities. I have seen young people grow in confidence, discover their talents, build lifelong friendships and, in some cases, continue their journeys to professional theatre, including Broadway and other exciting opportunities in the performing arts.
Those experiences convinced me that community theatre is far more than entertainment. It is a powerful tool for education, leadership development, personal growth and community transformation.
My journey to Kenya began through my involvement with Hope and Shine, where I had the opportunity to work alongside remarkable young people whose talent, resilience and determination left a lasting impression on me. Their passion reinforced my belief that, when children are given encouragement, guidance and opportunity, there is no limit to what they can achieve.
That journey continued with Disney's The Lion King Jr., a production that brought together children from different schools, communities and economic backgrounds in a way that demonstrated the true power of community theatre. Watching these young people grow—not only as performers but also as individuals—confirmed that Kenya has the talent, the passion and the potential to build something truly special.
These experiences inspired the establishment of The Stage and Beyond Trust.

The inspiration behind The Stage and Beyond Trust grew from years of working with young people and witnessing the remarkable impact that theatre has on confidence, discipline, teamwork and personal growth.
That vision became even clearer during our involvement in Disney's The Lion King Jr., a landmark community production that united children from different schools, communities and backgrounds across Nairobi.
The experience demonstrated that when young people are united by creativity, talent and purpose, barriers disappear. Friendships are formed, confidence grows and communities come together in celebration of young talent.
Inspired by this success, The Stage and Beyond Trust is creating sustainable opportunities for children and young people to participate in high-quality community theatre throughout the year.

Kenya is home to an extraordinary wealth of young talent. Every day, children demonstrate remarkable creativity, imagination and potential in schools, churches and communities. Yet many talented young people have limited access to structured performing arts programmes that nurture their abilities and help them reach their full potential.
